Apart from being the Festival Capital of Wales, Llangollen and the Dee Valley has a wealth of attractions and activities to appeal to almost everybody!

Some of the best visitor attractions in Wales can be found here - and one or two of the oldest too.

It was in 1884 that a retired White Star captain had the idea of giving visitors a ride in old lifeboats, drawn by horse-power, along the then quiet Llangollen Canal. The idea took off and the Llangollen Wharf is probably even more popular now than its ever been.

The Llangollen Railway, which replaced the canal as the life-blood of the town in the mid 1860's, is another 'must visit.'

Closed after 100 years service, the line and station were saved from demolition in 1974 by a group of enthusiast. The station was restored and a few hundred yards of track laid.

Almost 35 years later, two further station restorations at Berwyn and Carrog plus seven more miles of track later you have an attraction enjoyed by tens of thousands each year.

Even older than both of these are the ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey and Dinas Bran Castle respectively. The castle is perched high on a hill over-looking Llangollen and was the home of the founder of the Abbey, Madog.

Plas Newydd is another historic building being home to the famous Ladies of Llangollen, who eloped together from Ireland to the town in 1780 and for almost 50 years developed the house and gardens into what you see today.

All these and more are covered in the town's excellent museum, situated on Parade Street and is an excellent starting point for any visit to Llangollen.

The Llangollen Motor Museum is the other major museum in the town. This is a Mecca for all things mechanical, inclusive of cars and motorcycles going back to the really early days of motoring.

The Dee Valley is a centre for outdoor activities such as kayaking, white water rafting, climbing, abseiling and gorge walking.

There are a number of excellent mountain walks setting out from Llangollen such as the Dee Valley Way and North Berwyn Way, which encapsulate the stunning scenery and rich history of the region.

So, as you can see, there's more than enough to do when you visit Llangollen and the Dee Valley.
