Dinas Bran Castle

Dinas Bran Castle (Castell Dinas Bran) is both a hillfort and medieval castle. The oldest and probably originator of a settlement which is now Llangollen, the Iron Age defences and medieval castle are located high above the town on a rectangular platform.

Legend has it that the original fortress was built by a Prince named Bran and came to live there following a disagreement with his brother Beli.

The mother of these two quarrelling brothers was Corwena, whose home was situated near the modern town of Corwen a few miles away. The castle is also known as the 'Grail Castle' due to its legendary links with the Holy Grail.
Dinas Bran Castle

Dinas Bran Castle - Castell Dinas BranWhat remains of the medieval castle was built towards the later part of the 13th century by the princes of Powys Fadog.

During the wars between Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, Prince of Wales and Edward I of England the castle was burnt by the Welsh before it was captured in 1277 by Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln.

It was not repaired and ceased to be used after the 1280s.
